Periodontal Care in Bethesda: Healthy Gums, Lasting Smiles

Your gums are the foundation of your smile. Gum disease is one of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults, and it often develops without pain. At Bethesda Dental Group, our periodontal team diagnoses and treats gum disease at every stage, from early inflammation to advanced bone loss, and offers cosmetic and implant-related gum procedures under one roof.

Signs You May Need a Periodontal Evaluation

Gums that bleed when you brush or floss

Red, swollen or tender gums

Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth

Sensitivity at the gumline

Loose or shifting teeth, or a change in your bite

Pus between your teeth and gums

Reshapes uneven or overgrown gums for a healthier, more balanced smile.

Releases a tight band of tissue under the lip or tongue that can pull on the gums, cause recession or affect speech and comfort.

When a tooth cannot be saved, we remove it gently and place a bone graft in the socket to preserve the jawbone for a future implant.

Titanium implants replace missing teeth with a strong, natural-looking result that protects your jawbone. Our periodontal team places single implants, multiple implants and implant-supported bridges.

Adds bone to the upper jaw or to a thin jawbone so there is enough support for dental implants.

Implants can develop gum disease too. We clean, decontaminate and treat inflamed tissue around implants to protect your investment.

YOUR Periodontal Therapy · STEP BY STEP

Our Periodontal Procedures

A detailed exam of your gums, bone and bite. We measure the pockets around each tooth, take X-rays and review your health history so we can build a treatment plan that fits your needs.

The first line of treatment for gum disease. We remove plaque and tartar from below the gumline and smooth the root surfaces so your gums can heal and reattach to the teeth. Usually done in one to two visits with local anesthetic for comfort.

After gum disease is treated, regular maintenance visits (typically every 3 to 4 months) keep bacteria under control and help prevent the disease from coming back. Our Smile Perio+ membership includes 4 of these visits per year.

An antibiotic placed directly into deep gum pockets after a deep cleaning to target bacteria where they live and help pockets shrink.

A dental laser removes infected tissue and bacteria with less bleeding, less discomfort and faster healing than traditional methods for many patients.

For advanced gum disease, we gently fold back the gums, remove bacteria and tartar, and reshape damaged bone so the gums fit snugly around the teeth again. Smaller pockets are easier to keep clean at home.

When gum disease has destroyed bone, we can rebuild it with bone graft material and protective membranes that encourage your body to regrow lost bone and tissue around the tooth.

Treats gum recession by covering exposed roots with new gum tissue. This protects the roots, reduces sensitivity, stops further recession and improves the look of your smile.

Removes a small amount of gum (and sometimes bone) to expose more of a tooth. Used to prepare a tooth for a crown or filling, or to correct a "gummy" smile.
