IMPLANT-SUPPORTED DENTURES · BETHESDA, MD

Your dentures should stay put when you eat, talk and laugh.

Dental implants can give a removable denture a much more secure foundation, helping reduce the slipping and movement that often make traditional dentures frustrating to wear.

Snap them in for stability. Remove them when it’s time to clean.

WHEN TRADITIONAL DENTURES AREN’T ENOUGH

Six signs you may want more stability from your dentures.

A conventional denture can replace missing teeth, but it still relies largely on its fit against your gums. If keeping it comfortable and stable has become the hard part, implants may change the experience.

They move when you eat

If your denture shifts while chewing, implant retention can provide a more stable foundation for everyday function.

Talking makes you self-conscious

Clicking, slipping or worrying that your denture may move while you speak can make normal conversations feel less natural.

You depend on adhesive

If paste or adhesive has become part of every morning, implants may provide retention without relying on sticky products to hold the denture in place.

Your lower denture won’t stay put

Lower dentures can be especially challenging to stabilize because there is less surface area available to help hold them in place.

Certain foods feel off-limits

A denture that moves under chewing pressure can make some foods harder to manage. Additional implant stability may improve chewing function.

You’re ready for an upgrade

You may already have a denture that looks fine — but want it to feel more secure and predictable throughout the day.

Already wearing dentures? You don’t necessarily have to start the conversation from scratch.

Traditional denture: rests primarily on the gums.
Implant-retained denture: connects to implants for added stability.

WHAT CHANGES WITH IMPLANTS

The teeth may look similar. What holds them in place is completely different.

A conventional complete denture rests on the tissues of your mouth and depends on its fit, suction and sometimes adhesive for retention.

With an implant-retained denture, dental implants are placed in the jaw and connected to attachments that give the denture something solid to engage. The removable restoration can then snap onto and off of those attachments, providing additional stability while still allowing you to remove it yourself for cleaning.

There are different attachment designs — including individual attachment systems and bars connecting multiple implants — and the appropriate design depends on your anatomy, available bone, number and position of implants, prosthetic needs and treatment plan. Professional terminology varies because removable implant prostheses can receive support from both implants and oral tissues in different ways.

FIND THE RIGHT LEVEL OF SUPPORT

Removable, partial or fixed? Start with how you want your new teeth to function.

“Implant dentures” can describe very different restorations. We’ll help you understand which level of stability, removability and maintenance best fits your situation.

Removable Implant-Retained Denture

A complete denture attaches securely to dental implants for added retention during the day, then can be removed by you for daily cleaning.

Implant-Supported Partial Denture

When some natural teeth remain, selected partial dentures can also use one or more implants to provide more stable support. Bethesda Dental Group specifically offers this option.

Fixed Full-Arch Teeth

A fixed implant restoration is secured to implants and cannot be removed by the patient; only the dental team removes it when clinically necessary.

YOUR IMPLANT DENTURE · STEP BY STEP

Build the foundation. Let it heal. Give your denture something solid to hold onto.

We evaluate your gums, remaining teeth when present, jawbone and existing denture, using dental imaging to determine whether implants are appropriate and how they should support your restoration. Bethesda Dental Group notes that adequate jawbone and overall health are important considerations for implant treatment.

The planned implants are positioned in the jaw and allowed time to integrate with the surrounding bone, creating stable anchor points for the denture.

Once the implants are ready, your existing denture may sometimes be modified or a new restoration created to connect to them. We then adjust the fit and show you how to insert, remove and clean it properly.
