Take the stains down. Turn the brightness up.
Coffee, tea, wine and everyday life can gradually dull your smile. Professional teeth whitening gives you a dentist-supervised way to brighten your natural teeth — in the office or on your own schedule at home.
Whiter doesn’t have to mean unnaturally white. We start with the shade that looks right on you.
Six things that can change your whitening result.
Not every cavity or damaged filling hurts. Sometimes the first clue is simply that a tooth looks, feels or bites differently than it used to.
Coffee, tea & red wine
Dark-colored drinks can leave external stains on enamel over time, especially when they’re part of your everyday routine.
Natural aging
As enamel changes with age, more of the naturally yellower dentin underneath can begin to show through.
Some stains run deeper
Discoloration inside the tooth can respond differently from surface staining, so the type of stain affects what whitening can realistically accomplish.
Crowns & fillings stay the same shade
Whitening changes natural teeth — not porcelain crowns, veneers, implants or tooth-colored fillings.
Sensitivity matters
Temporary tooth sensitivity can happen during whitening, so tell us if your teeth are already sensitive before you begin.
Your goal matters too
Some patients want a subtle refresh. Others want a noticeably brighter result. We plan around your starting shade and expectations.
The brightest shade isn’t automatically the best shade.
Natural teeth can whiten. Crowns, veneers and tooth-colored fillings won’t — so existing dental work matters when choosing your target shade.
Whitening works on color. It doesn’t redesign the tooth.
Professional whitening uses peroxide-based bleaching agents to break down colored compounds within natural tooth structure and make the teeth appear lighter. Both hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide are commonly used in professional whitening systems.
That makes whitening a strong option when color is the main thing you want to change. It doesn’t straighten teeth, close gaps, repair chips or change tooth shape — those concerns belong to treatments such as Invisalign, bonding or veneers.
There’s another important limitation: crowns, veneers, implants and tooth-colored fillings don’t bleach along with natural enamel. If you have visible restorations, we need to consider their existing shade before deciding how whitening fits into the overall plan.
Faster in the office — or gradually at home.
Professional whitening can follow different timelines. The best choice depends on how quickly you want results, your sensitivity and how much control you want over the process.
In-Office Whitening
Professional bleaching gel is applied in the office while your gums are protected. Bethesda Dental Group currently offers light-activated professional whitening for patients who want a faster in-office approach.
- For patients who want a noticeable whitening change without managing a multi-day treatment routine at home.
- For patients who prefer to whiten on their own schedule and build toward their desired shade more gradually.
Custom Take-Home Whitening
Custom trays made to fit your teeth hold professional whitening gel more precisely while allowing you to brighten your smile gradually at home.
Whitening & Shade Planning
If you have visible crowns, fillings or veneers — or cosmetic dental work planned — we can evaluate your current shades first so whitening fits into the bigger aesthetic plan.
- For patients with visible restorations or anyone considering bonding, veneers or crowns after whitening.
Check the smile. Choose the shade. Brighten with a plan.
- Make sure whitening fits the problem
We look at your teeth, gums, existing restorations, sensitivity and type of discoloration before recommending a whitening approach. A dental evaluation can help identify factors that influence both safety and results.
- Choose in-office or take-home
We discuss how quickly you want to whiten, your starting shade and sensitivity history, then select the professional option that fits those priorities.
- Whiten — then maintain the result
Follow the recommended treatment schedule, then use your personalized maintenance guidance to help manage new staining and decide when a touch-up makes sense.

I hadn’t been to the dentist in longer than I wanted to admit, so I was expecting a lecture. Instead, the whole visit felt easy. My cleaning was gentle, everything was explained clearly, and I left knowing exactly what to keep an eye on and when to come back.

I had a small chip on my front tooth that bothered me in every photo. I expected a much bigger treatment, but bonding was enough. The shade matches beautifully and the tooth still looks completely natural.

I drink coffee every day and felt like my teeth had gradually become much darker than they used to be. I wanted them brighter, but I definitely didn’t want that artificial super-white look. They helped me choose a shade that still looked like me, and the difference was exactly what I wanted. My smile looks fresher without looking “done.”

I avoided the dentist for years because of a terrible experience when I was younger. By the time I finally booked, I was embarrassed about both my teeth and how anxious I was. Nobody made me feel judged. They talked through the sedation options with me beforehand, explained exactly what to expect and made the appointment feel completely manageable. It was the first time I left a dental office thinking, “I can actually do this again.”

I used to think preventive dentistry just meant getting my teeth cleaned and coming back six months later. They actually took the time to explain why I kept getting cavities in the same areas and helped me change a few things at home. We also added extra protection to a couple of teeth that needed it. My visits feel much more proactive now instead of waiting for the next problem.

I had been dealing with jaw soreness and painful clicking for months and wasn’t even sure whether I should see a dentist about it. The appointment was very thorough. They asked when the pain happened, checked how my jaw was moving and explained the difference between the joint and the surrounding muscles. I appreciated that the plan felt conservative and specific to what I was actually experiencing.

I had already been diagnosed with sleep apnea but struggled with my CPAP enough that I wasn’t using it consistently. I talked with my sleep doctor about alternatives and then came to Bethesda Dental Group for an oral appliance. The fitting process was easy, the adjustments were explained clearly, and traveling is much simpler now. My wife is also very happy that the snoring has improved.

I had a badly broken molar and kept putting the appointment off because I was nervous about having it removed. They showed me why the tooth couldn’t really be saved, talked me through everything before starting, and the actual extraction was much more manageable than I had built it up to be. I also appreciated that we talked about what to do with the space afterward instead of just stopping there.

I went in with a toothache that had kept me up the night before and was honestly dreading hearing “root canal.” The team explained exactly what they were seeing and what would happen next. Once I was numb, the appointment was much easier than I expected, and the relief afterward made me wish I had come in sooner.

I chipped an old filling and was convinced it was going to turn into a much bigger procedure. Dr. Shawn showed me exactly what was happening, explained my options clearly, and repaired the tooth without making the visit stressful. My bite feels completely normal again, and the new filling blends in so well I can barely see it.
