SEDATION DENTISTRY · BETHESDA, MD

Nervous about the dentist? You don’t have to white-knuckle it.

Dental anxiety is real — and avoiding care because of it can turn small problems into bigger ones. Bethesda Dental Group offers several sedation options to help make the treatment you need feel calmer and more manageable.

You tell us what makes dental visits difficult. We’ll help find the right level of support.

YOUR RISK IS PERSONAL

Six things that can change the way we protect your smile.

Two people can brush the same way and still have very different cavity risk. Your history, saliva, diet and even the shape of your teeth can change what prevention should look like for you.

You’ve had a bad experience before

A painful or frightening dental visit in the past can make even a routine appointment feel stressful years later.

You keep putting treatment off

If you repeatedly cancel, reschedule or wait until something hurts because you’re anxious, sedation may help break that cycle.

You feel anxious before you arrive

For some patients, the worry starts days before the appointment — not when they actually sit in the chair.

Dental sights or sounds trigger you

Needles, instruments, drilling sounds or simply being reclined can make treatment difficult even when you know you’re safe.

You need a longer procedure

Sedation can help selected patients remain more relaxed and comfortable when treatment will take more time in the chair.

It’s hard to stay comfortable

A strong gag reflex, difficulty sitting still or other individual challenges can make certain dental visits more demanding.

You don’t have to “just deal with” dental anxiety to get the care you need.

Sedation helps you relax. Local anesthesia numbs the treatment area. They solve different problems — and may be used together.

SEDATION VS. NUMBING

Feeling relaxed and feeling numb are two different things.

Sedation dentistry is designed to help with anxiety, awareness and comfort during the experience. Local anesthesia has a different job: it numbs the treatment area so you don’t feel pain from the dental procedure itself.

Depending on your treatment, both may be used together. Being sedated does not automatically mean you’re unconscious, either. With lighter forms of sedation, you remain awake and able to respond while feeling more relaxed.

The appropriate option depends on more than how nervous you feel. Your health history, medications, the procedure being performed and the level of sedation needed all matter when deciding what is appropriate.

YOUR SEDATION OPTIONS

From taking the edge off to deeper relaxation.

Bethesda Dental Group offers different approaches so sedation can be matched to your anxiety, treatment and health needs.

Nitrous Oxide

Often called “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is inhaled through a small nasal mask and can help you feel calmer while remaining awake and responsive. Its effects typically wear off quickly once administration stops.

Oral Sedation

Sedative medication taken by mouth can provide a stronger level of relaxation than nitrous oxide while allowing you to remain conscious and responsive during treatment.

IV Sedation

Medication is delivered intravenously for a deeper level of sedation. Bethesda Dental Group works with a trained anesthesiologist who monitors your vital signs and level of sedation throughout the procedure.

YOUR SEDATION VISIT · STEP BY STEP

First we understand the anxiety. Then we plan around it.

We talk about your anxiety, previous dental experiences, health history, medications and the treatment you need before recommending a sedation approach.

We explain the option being recommended, what you can expect to feel and any instructions you need to follow before arriving for treatment.

During your visit, your comfort and safety are monitored according to the type of sedation being used, and we’ll explain what you need for recovery afterward.
