Prevent the dental work you’d rather not need.
Preventive dentistry goes beyond finding problems early. We look at the habits, risk factors and vulnerable areas in your mouth so we can help lower the chance of cavities and other avoidable dental problems before they require more treatment.
The goal is simple: protect healthy teeth while they’re still healthy.
Six things that can change the way we protect your smile.
Two people can brush the same way and still have very different cavity risk. Your history, saliva, diet and even the shape of your teeth can change what prevention should look like for you.
You’ve had cavities before
A recent history of tooth decay can tell us that your smile may benefit from more targeted preventive care.
Your mouth often feels dry
Saliva naturally helps protect and cleanse your teeth. When saliva flow drops, decay can become easier to develop.
You snack or sip frequently
Frequent exposure to sugary or fermentable carbohydrates can repeatedly challenge tooth enamel throughout the day.
Your molars have deep grooves
Deep pits and grooves on back teeth can trap plaque and food in places that are harder to keep clean.
Your roots are more exposed
Receding gums can uncover root surfaces that need a different level of attention than intact enamel.
Some areas are harder to clean
Braces, bridges, crowded teeth and other hard-to-reach areas can make daily plaque control more demanding.
Prevention works better when it’s built around your actual risk.
Early enamel decay can sometimes be stopped or reversed before it becomes a permanent cavity.
There’s a window where prevention can still change the story.
Tooth decay doesn’t begin as a hole. It starts when acids produced by plaque bacteria pull minerals from the enamel — a process called demineralization.
In its earliest stages, when the enamel surface is still intact, that mineral loss may sometimes be stopped or even reversed through better plaque control, fluoride exposure, diet changes and other preventive measures. Once enough tooth structure breaks down and a true cavity forms, the lost structure can no longer simply grow back and restorative treatment may be needed.
That’s one reason preventive dentistry is different from simply waiting until something hurts. We’re looking for opportunities to protect, strengthen and monitor teeth while intervention can still stay conservative.
Give extra protection where your smile actually needs it.
Not everyone needs every preventive treatment. We match the approach to your cavity history, home care, tooth anatomy and individual risk.
Personalized Prevention Plan
We look beyond “brush and floss” to identify the specific habits and areas that matter most for you, then make home-care recommendations that are realistic enough to follow.
- For anyone who wants more personalized prevention — especially patients with recurring cavities, dry mouth or areas that are difficult to keep clean.
- For children and adults whose cavity risk, enamel condition or other factors make additional fluoride protection worthwhile.
Professional Fluoride
When appropriate, professionally applied fluoride can strengthen vulnerable tooth surfaces and provide additional protection for people at increased risk of decay.
Dental Sealants
A thin protective coating can be placed over the deep grooves of selected back teeth, helping keep cavity-causing plaque and food out of areas that are difficult to brush.
- Especially useful for cavity-prone molars in children and teens — and for selected adults when tooth anatomy and risk make sealants appropriate.
Know your risk. Protect the weak spots. Stay ahead.
- Understand your risk
We look at your cavity history, current oral health, home-care routine, diet, saliva and other factors that can influence what happens next.
- Add protection where it helps
That may mean adjusting your home routine, strengthening vulnerable teeth with fluoride or protecting selected grooves with sealants.
- Reassess as things change
Your risk isn’t fixed forever. We monitor what’s working and adapt your preventive plan as your mouth, health and habits change.

I hadn’t been to the dentist in longer than I wanted to admit, so I was expecting a lecture. Instead, the whole visit felt easy. My cleaning was gentle, everything was explained clearly, and I left knowing exactly what to keep an eye on and when to come back.

I had a small chip on my front tooth that bothered me in every photo. I expected a much bigger treatment, but bonding was enough. The shade matches beautifully and the tooth still looks completely natural.

I drink coffee every day and felt like my teeth had gradually become much darker than they used to be. I wanted them brighter, but I definitely didn’t want that artificial super-white look. They helped me choose a shade that still looked like me, and the difference was exactly what I wanted. My smile looks fresher without looking “done.”

I avoided the dentist for years because of a terrible experience when I was younger. By the time I finally booked, I was embarrassed about both my teeth and how anxious I was. Nobody made me feel judged. They talked through the sedation options with me beforehand, explained exactly what to expect and made the appointment feel completely manageable. It was the first time I left a dental office thinking, “I can actually do this again.”

I used to think preventive dentistry just meant getting my teeth cleaned and coming back six months later. They actually took the time to explain why I kept getting cavities in the same areas and helped me change a few things at home. We also added extra protection to a couple of teeth that needed it. My visits feel much more proactive now instead of waiting for the next problem.

I had been dealing with jaw soreness and painful clicking for months and wasn’t even sure whether I should see a dentist about it. The appointment was very thorough. They asked when the pain happened, checked how my jaw was moving and explained the difference between the joint and the surrounding muscles. I appreciated that the plan felt conservative and specific to what I was actually experiencing.

I had already been diagnosed with sleep apnea but struggled with my CPAP enough that I wasn’t using it consistently. I talked with my sleep doctor about alternatives and then came to Bethesda Dental Group for an oral appliance. The fitting process was easy, the adjustments were explained clearly, and traveling is much simpler now. My wife is also very happy that the snoring has improved.

I had a badly broken molar and kept putting the appointment off because I was nervous about having it removed. They showed me why the tooth couldn’t really be saved, talked me through everything before starting, and the actual extraction was much more manageable than I had built it up to be. I also appreciated that we talked about what to do with the space afterward instead of just stopping there.

I went in with a toothache that had kept me up the night before and was honestly dreading hearing “root canal.” The team explained exactly what they were seeing and what would happen next. Once I was numb, the appointment was much easier than I expected, and the relief afterward made me wish I had come in sooner.

I chipped an old filling and was convinced it was going to turn into a much bigger procedure. Dr. Shawn showed me exactly what was happening, explained my options clearly, and repaired the tooth without making the visit stressful. My bite feels completely normal again, and the new filling blends in so well I can barely see it.
