Need a tooth replaced now? You may not have to wait months to see it back.
In the right situation, an implant can be placed and connected to a temporary tooth or fixed provisional restoration the same day — so healing can begin without leaving you with an obvious gap.
Same-day teeth are possible in selected cases.
The final restoration still comes after healing.
Six things to know before expecting a new tooth in one day.
Immediate implant treatment can shorten the time you spend without a visible tooth, but “same day” doesn’t mean skipping biology. Planning, stability and healing still matter.
The implant may go in right after extraction
In selected sites, a failing tooth can be removed and an implant placed into the extraction site during the same appointment.
A temporary tooth may go on immediately
When the implant and surrounding tissues meet the right criteria, a provisional restoration can sometimes be connected without waiting months.
Stability is what makes timing possible
The implant needs adequate initial stability in the bone before immediate restoration or loading can be considered predictable.
Your bone and gums still matter
The anatomy of the site, available bone, soft tissues and overall clinical conditions help determine whether an immediate approach makes sense.
Your implant is still healing underneath
Having a temporary tooth attached does not mean the implant has finished integrating with the surrounding bone. Healing continues after you leave.
Your first tooth usually isn’t the final one
The same-day restoration is often provisional. Once healing is ready, it can be replaced by the definitive crown, bridge or full-arch restoration.
Same-day is about shortening the gap — not rushing the healing.
Same-day tooth ≠ fully healed implant. The temporary restoration can be there while the biology underneath continues doing its work.
“Implant today” and “tooth today” aren’t actually the same decision.
There are two separate timing questions in implant dentistry. Immediate implant placement means placing the implant into a fresh extraction site during the same procedure in which the tooth is removed. Immediate restoration or loading refers to connecting a prosthetic tooth to the implant very soon afterward. The ITI defines immediate protocols as connecting the restoration within the first week after implant placement.
A patient may qualify for one without necessarily qualifying for the other. Even if an implant can be placed immediately after an extraction, we still need enough initial stability and favorable clinical conditions before deciding whether attaching a tooth immediately is appropriate.
And “immediate” never means “already healed.” Bone and soft tissue continue to heal around the implant after the provisional tooth is attached. The definitive restoration typically comes later in the treatment sequence.
One tooth, several teeth or a full arch — immediate treatment can mean different things.
The “same-day” part describes the timing. The restoration itself still needs to match how many teeth you’re replacing and what your anatomy allows.
Immediate Single-Tooth Replacement
A failing tooth may sometimes be extracted, replaced with an implant and fitted with a provisional crown during the same treatment sequence. Immediate placement and provisionalization are well documented in carefully selected single-tooth cases.
- For selected patients losing one tooth whose bone, gums and implant stability allow an immediate approach.
- For selected patients replacing several teeth who have sufficient stability and a treatment plan designed for immediate provisionalization.
Immediate Multiple-Tooth Replacement
When several neighboring teeth are being replaced, implants may sometimes support an immediate provisional bridge while the implants continue to heal.
Immediate Full-Arch Teeth
Same-day provisional teeth can also be part of full-arch implant treatment when the implants achieve the stability required for immediate function. All-on-4® is one specific example of this approach.
- For selected patients replacing most or all teeth in an arch who qualify for an immediately loaded fixed provisional restoration.
Plan before the appointment. Test stability during it. Restore immediately when it’s right.
- Plan everything before treatment
We examine the tooth or missing space, review your bone and soft tissues and use dental imaging to plan the implant position and provisional restoration before deciding whether an immediate approach is realistic.
- Remove, place & verify stability
When extraction is needed, the tooth may be removed and the implant placed during the same visit. The stability achieved at placement helps determine whether immediate restoration can safely move forward.
- Leave with a provisional — then heal
If the clinical criteria are met, the temporary tooth or restoration is connected. Healing continues underneath, and the definitive restoration is completed later when the site is ready.

I hadn’t been to the dentist in longer than I wanted to admit, so I was expecting a lecture. Instead, the whole visit felt easy. My cleaning was gentle, everything was explained clearly, and I left knowing exactly what to keep an eye on and when to come back.

I had a small chip on my front tooth that bothered me in every photo. I expected a much bigger treatment, but bonding was enough. The shade matches beautifully and the tooth still looks completely natural.

I drink coffee every day and felt like my teeth had gradually become much darker than they used to be. I wanted them brighter, but I definitely didn’t want that artificial super-white look. They helped me choose a shade that still looked like me, and the difference was exactly what I wanted. My smile looks fresher without looking “done.”

I avoided the dentist for years because of a terrible experience when I was younger. By the time I finally booked, I was embarrassed about both my teeth and how anxious I was. Nobody made me feel judged. They talked through the sedation options with me beforehand, explained exactly what to expect and made the appointment feel completely manageable. It was the first time I left a dental office thinking, “I can actually do this again.”

I used to think preventive dentistry just meant getting my teeth cleaned and coming back six months later. They actually took the time to explain why I kept getting cavities in the same areas and helped me change a few things at home. We also added extra protection to a couple of teeth that needed it. My visits feel much more proactive now instead of waiting for the next problem.

I had been dealing with jaw soreness and painful clicking for months and wasn’t even sure whether I should see a dentist about it. The appointment was very thorough. They asked when the pain happened, checked how my jaw was moving and explained the difference between the joint and the surrounding muscles. I appreciated that the plan felt conservative and specific to what I was actually experiencing.

I had already been diagnosed with sleep apnea but struggled with my CPAP enough that I wasn’t using it consistently. I talked with my sleep doctor about alternatives and then came to Bethesda Dental Group for an oral appliance. The fitting process was easy, the adjustments were explained clearly, and traveling is much simpler now. My wife is also very happy that the snoring has improved.

I had a badly broken molar and kept putting the appointment off because I was nervous about having it removed. They showed me why the tooth couldn’t really be saved, talked me through everything before starting, and the actual extraction was much more manageable than I had built it up to be. I also appreciated that we talked about what to do with the space afterward instead of just stopping there.

I went in with a toothache that had kept me up the night before and was honestly dreading hearing “root canal.” The team explained exactly what they were seeing and what would happen next. Once I was numb, the appointment was much easier than I expected, and the relief afterward made me wish I had come in sooner.

I chipped an old filling and was convinced it was going to turn into a much bigger procedure. Dr. Shawn showed me exactly what was happening, explained my options clearly, and repaired the tooth without making the visit stressful. My bite feels completely normal again, and the new filling blends in so well I can barely see it.

Immediate implants aren’t right for every tooth or every patient. But when the anatomy and stability are right, you may be able to start healing with a temporary tooth already in place.
